About the Program

Building on UMS’s long institutional history it offers three specialization tracks: Islamic Psychology, Educational Psychology, and Mental Health. UMS has established both a Center for Islamic Psychology and a Center for Indigenous Psychology to support this work.

Primary Focus

Doctoral-level research, theory development, and scholarly contribution. Three specialization tracks for focused research.

Teaching Format

In-person at UMS campus, Surakarta, Central Java. Doctoral coursework, supervised research, and dissertation. Supported by UMS’s research centers and symposium infrastructure.

Theoretical Foundations

Islamic psychology frameworks from Indonesia’s scholarly tradition; indigenous psychological approaches integrated with Islamic principles; classical traditions; contemporary research methodology; cross-cultural and indigenous psychology.

Academic Structure

Prerequisites

Master’s degree in psychology or a related field from a recognized institution. Research proposal expected as part of application.

Assessment & Completion Requirements

Doctoral coursework, comprehensive examinations, English-language journal publication requirements, and dissertation defense.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Conduct original doctoral-level research contributing to theoretical and empirical foundations of Islamic psychology.
  • Demonstrate advanced competency in one of three specialization tracks.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals (English-language publication requirement).
  • Engage with both classical Islamic traditions and contemporary psychological research methodologies.
  • Contribute to institutional and professional development of Islamic psychology globally.
